Digital citizenship

Learning in a digital age asks us to know and model appropriate behavior when using technology. Broken down further, learners and teachers/facilitators have certain rights and responsibilities when technology is part of the learning environment, whether in school or in the workplace.

What does effective digital citizenship look like in practice? At my workplace, our organization outlines expectations for online internal communications as well as our digital presence, ranging from professionalism in our email dialogues to copyright law as it pertains to use of images and text in print or online. We share these guidelines via onsite and online employee orientations, policy and project updates by email and virtual meetings or presentations, and ongoing support for each other as colleagues.

In addition to following and promoting best practices for our digital presence, we are committed to making our educational resources fully accessible, whether onsite or online. That means adhering to federal ADA guidelines and working with the UMaine web office to ensure compliance, especially when contracting with new software vendors. In addition, we are particularly sensitive to age-appropriate use by, and dissemination of information about, youth relative to our 4-H program.

Sharing of 'how-to' trainings and updates are generally provided by those responsible for the policy or process in question. So our assistant director in charge of human resources facilitates trainings on civil rights and risk management, while our communications and marketing team takes responsibility for sharing best practices about creating online or print educational materials and works directly with staff with the goal of staying responsive, both internally and with our clients.

As an organization whose mission is based on providing access to research-based knowledge and its practical application, our goal is to stay informed and collaborate to sustain and expand an effective digital presence using an intentional approach to life-long learning and modeling engaged digital citizenship.
